A Tesla Cybertruck exploded in a fiery blast Wednesday morning near the entrance of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas, killing one person inside the vehicle and injuring several bystanders. Local officials are treating the incident as a possible act of terrorism, though a motive has not yet been determined.
The explosion occurred hours after a tragic attack in New Orleans, where a pickup truck driven by a man flying an ISIS flag plowed into New Year's Eve revelers on Bourbon Street, killing 15 and injuring over 30. The two incidents have raised concerns of a potential link.
According to Clark County/Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill, both the Cybertruck in Las Vegas and the rented pickup truck used in New Orleans were sourced from the same rental platform, Turo. "We are investigating whether there is any connectivity," McMahill said at a press conference.
Turo, an online vehicle-sharing platform, actively assists law enforcement in their investigations. In a statement, the company said, "We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat."
